Infrastructure-as-a-service, or IaaS, is the category of cloud computing that refers to Web-based access to storage and computing power on the cloud. It is also known as the ‘Elastic Cloud’ as the server capacity and application back-end scalability could be extended based on application’s users demand. Included in this category are providers of infrastructure software needed to deploy private clouds based on server virtualization technologies.

Some of the market leaders of IaaS for the enterprise market includes VMware, Amazon, and Symantec.

VMware: The market leader of virtualization solutions has entered the market this year with their flagship product Vsphere or what they have called “The Cloud OS”. Vsphere allows companies implement virtualization technologies in their datacenters and deploy their own private clouds. Amazon: Amazon is the market leader in IaaS. They offer a broad range of services on the cloud, being the most successful EC2: Elastic Cloud Computing and S3: Simple Storage. EC2’s pricing model is truly on-demand as you pay only for what you use. There is no minimum fee. US pricing range from $0.10 to $0.80 per hour of Standard Linux/Unix instance usage and $0.125 to $1.00 per hour of Standard Windows instance usage. S3 pricing starts at $0.150 per GB – first 50 TB / month of storage used plus data transfer and request fees.

Symantec: Symantec has entered strong the SaaS market extending their enterprise security and endpoint protection solutions to the cloud with a range of services called the Service Protection Network (SPN). Symantec currently offers two online backup service options to help small and mid-sized businesses address critical backup and recovery needs: Online Backup and Online Storage for Backup Exec.
